FdSpy

What is FdSpy?

FdSpy enables users of www.finaldimension.net to receive real-time information on a number of "events" taking place on the site. In other words, instead of having to reload web pages to see if something has happened, such information can be received more or less automatically.

How does FdSpy work?

As mentioned above, FdSpy provides information on events. These events take place when certain things happen on this web site. For example, when somebody logs in, one such event is "fired". Another event is fired when somebody comments a picture in the photo galleries. Events are categorized based on their type. Adding new events is also possible - if you have some ideas of additional events, send a message to nmd.

How do I use FdSpy?

Requesting FdSpy to send information on events is called "subscribing" to events. Subscriptions are managed with FdSpy Subscription Manager, where you choose which events you wish to receive information on, and how (there is a link to Subscription Manager on the front page as well, on the "What's hot list").

Currently, FdSpy can provide information on events in three ways:

  1. MSN (messenger)
  2. IRC (channel #fd on IRCNet)
  3. SMS (text messages to mobile phones)

Before you can subscribe to event information in the above-mentioned ways, FdSpy needs to know who you are on IRC and MSN, and what your mobile phone number is. Below you will find descriptions of what to do to be able to subscribe to event information:

MSN

On MSN, FdSpy needs to know your MSN login name (for example, johndoe@hotmail.com). First, your MSN login name must appear in your profile on finaldimension.net (IM/IRC field). Second, you must add fdspy@hotmail.com to your list of contacts on MSN. Please add it using Microsoft's MSN, problems have occurred with other ones. If you add fdspy@hotmail.com to your MSN, but your own login name is not found in your profile, FdSpy will not add you to its list. Once you can see FdSpy online on MSN, you can remove it from your list and still receive event information, as long as you do not block it.

IRC

On IRC, FdSpy can recognize you based on your hostmask. By sending a private message to FdSpy, beginning with the word "register", followed by your login name and your password on finaldimension.net, FdSpy will know who you are, and recognize you in the future. For example, if your login name was john, and your password was doe, you could issue the following command in IRC:

/msg fd-spy register john doe

You may register more than one hostmask. It is needed, if you access IRC from more than one location, and wish to receive event information independent of your location. To unregister a hostmask, just replace the word "register" with "unregister".

SMS

Currently the possibility to receive event information via SMS is reserved for special purposes only. If you would need it, you are welcome to ask nmd.
